DRP Enterprises Asks the Questions That Create The Vision To a Successful Project

What a lot of contractors fail to realize, is that any time a project is taken on, they want to do a thousand different things for the customer, when in reality, the customer’s vision is what forms the project.😊

One of the most important keys to providing a successful project is to interview and question the customer on their vision of the project. It is important to know how a deck will be used.

  • How often they will spend time on the deck?

  • Do they like to sit on the deck with their pets?

  • Will they be sunning and tanning on the deck?

  • Will they be cleaning the deck for maintenance or hiring someone?

These are just a few questions a deck builder or contractor should ask a potential customer. You may ask now, why should you be asking these types of questions. Some of these seem personal in nature and who cares how we use the deck.

How much time you spend on the deck will determine which type of coating if the deck will be stained or how much to spend on a particular composite product line. Pets make a huge decision factor for a deck. A deck that is stained with a solid stain and a big dog who frequents the deck is a really bad idea, unfortunately many contractors and homeowners end up with buyer's remorse when these coatings fail and cannot be removed easily. Pets do not like the engineered decking as much, specifically the dark colors. If you like laying on your deck with your dog a lighter color may be a better suggestion. Sunning and tanning can be an issue because the sunscreen in a metal can can take the color out of the composite and PVC planks and become permanent damage. This also happens with pesticides and insecticides in metal cans. This is called plasticizing and is the result of much of the damage we see on composite decks because the property owner was never informed and once the mistake is made it is irreversible. This ties into the cleaning and maintenance of the deck. Pressure washing, bleach, and other products may void your warranty so an informed property owner safeguards against this. Be careful of contractors who are not informed of product recommendations and warranties.

A great contractor will get an idea of your intended use and ask the right questions to ensure you are happy with the deck or the work performed for years to come. Making sure the customer's vision develops into an outdoor living space that will be enjoyed should be paramount for any contractor or company.
